Some New League Events and Some Old Favorites Return
First Wednesday of Each Month
5:30 pm Hot Topics at Hot Spots uses the happy hour to bring members together to chat informally about current events and hot public policy issues. The board hopes that these regular social gatherings will provide time for talk focused on pressing issues.
12:00 noon The old No-Agenda Lunch has morphed into Dine & Discuss and is another occasion for good food and stimulating and congenial conversation.
Held the first Wednesday of each month, these 5:30 pm and 12 noon activities promise to add a social spark to membership in the League. Non-members such as spouses, co-workers, and friends are welcome to join the fun.
RSVP to Organization VP Linda Sharp at linda15262000@yahoo.com
A Year of League Study
2011-2012 will be a year of research, member discussion, and coming to consensus to define League positions in several public policy areas.
A state study of Water as a Commodity promises to address the current trend of marketing water; some say it’s the new oil.
At the national level members address the trend of outsourcing and Privatization of Government Services.
They also take a new look at the nation’s education systems and the Federal Role in Public Education.
Locally, members adopted a timely study of Transportation Needs in Smith County.
Together these four issues guarantee an intense year of debate as they ask members to take part in a series of lively and compelling dialogues culminating in four possible new League positions.
